The darkened silhouette of a cat before a backdrop of neon swirls and splotches.

Stephen Baxter once likened science fiction to therapy. “You’re telling a story because you’re frightened of the future.”

I am also frightened of the future. I’m frightened of what will happen to civilization, the environment, and the people and animals I love.

Reading helped. Ted Chiang’s collections made me a better, happier person. Octavia Butler taught me about human nature. Arthur C. Clarke diverted my mind with drug-like wonder of the unknown. But what helped me cope with conscious existence better than anything else was when I put pen to paper.

Now, I use science fiction to find peace. Maybe I can help others find peace, too.
